DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
My experience of learning British Sign Language, interacting with the Deaf community for over 7 years and passion for sound design has led me to write the script of Volume, a story that decentres the voice. While I regret not being able to find a deaf person for the role of June in time for shooting, through consultation and drawing on my experiences, I hope the film champions the Deaf community and encourages more Deaf representation in film.This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.
SYNOPSIS
Tai is a young aspiring singer. She never has to work for the roles because she has a magic ring that controls other people’s voices. One day, after a night out, she wakes up with a banging headache and looks down to realise… her ring is GONE! And with it her voice. Tai must now learn to communicate, perform and find her new identity as a singer who has lost her voice.
