Through Her Eyes
(Grace May, 2025)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

This film was born from a desire to explore the quiet, often unnoticed emotional distances that can grow between people who love each other deeply, especially within the parent-child bond. As a storyteller and filmmaker, I’m drawn to the subtle ways in which connection is lost and, more importantly, how it can be rediscovered. Through the eyes of a curious child and the lens of a mother weighed down by routine, I wanted to illustrate how wonder and joy can quietly slip away in adulthood. Using light, movement, and simple acts like chalk drawing, I’ve aimed to highlight how beauty can be found in ordinary moments. This film is both a celebration of childhood innocence and a gentle call to remember our own. It’s a reflection on how love and connection often lie not in grand gestures, but in the smallest shared experiences.

This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.

SYNOPSIS

A heartwarming journey of rediscovery, this short film follows a mother and daughter navigating the complexities of daily life. Through the daughter's innocent wonder and the mother's weariness, we see the emotional distance that grows between them. But, as a simple moment of connection shifts the mother's perspective, a gradual thawing begins. Together, they find joy in life's little moments, creating art and running through a sunlit park. A beautiful reminder that sometimes, all we need is each other to rediscover the magic in the world.
