ARTIST STATEMENT

A Rhythmic Colour Study series

As an artist I am interested in the aesthetics of mark making in painting; how paint can be manipulated to convey form, accentuating the bond between process and outcome. The emphasis of the relationship between process and outcome is resolved through the making process and visually presented in the final stage of the painting. Oil paint is used, along with purposeful and controlled gesture, to convey the body’s movement during the making process in the form of marks and visual rhythmic stutters. The stutter in my paintings; the result of purposeful and physical pauses in arm movement relays a pause in physical motion represented in the final form. This manipulation of oil paint is a dialogue of my creative process and my personal interest in gestured mark making.
