Space Debris
My practice combines drawing and sculpture to explore space
debris, asteroids and the material remnants of human activity through repetition
and shifting perceptions. This installation centres on a large, reflective
mylar sculpture – reminiscent of crushed metal and inorganic structures – surrounded
by a series of A2 pastel drawings, depicted under blue light. Each drawing
captures a different angle of the same sculpture, using consistent techniques,
materials and a limited colour palette to emphasise how repetition and slight
shifts in perspective alter our understanding of form. Arranged in a circular
sequence, the drawings orbit the sculpture, which is suspended in the centre of
the space. As viewers move through the installation, their presence creates
faint air currents which gently rotate the sculpture, altering how the light
catches its surface. This slow movement mirrors the changes seen across the
drawing series, creating a dialogue between the two media. The installation
draws the viewer into an abstracted ‘space’ – both the physical gallery space
and an imagined outer space – where repetition and alteration reflect humans’
impact beyond Earth, and shape our understanding of form, space, and time.
