Sand
(Beth Cooper, 2025)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Sand is an experimental short film that journeys into the quiet, often forgotten spaces of our inner child, using the elemental languages of sand and water, as well as childhood imagery of hand puppets and a bucket and spade. These natural mediums reflect the fluidity of memory, the impermanence of time, and the grounding simplicity of our earliest connections to the world around us.
Through a non-linear visual narrative, the film embraces abstraction to evoke emotion rather than prescribe meaning. In stripping away conventional storytelling, the film invites viewers to feel the tension between what has been lost and what still lives within us. It is an ode to the child inside us who still listens to the wind, touches the earth, and dreams in shapes and shadows.

This film is produced as part of Experimental Cinema Module.

SYNOPSIS

Sand is an experimental short film that explores the themes of healing one’s mental health and inner child through nature. Without dialogue or traditional narrative, the film flows through abstract imagery, grains slipping through fingers, tides rolling across the beach, and being submerged in a body of water. The film follows a journey through chaos and uncertainty to peace and stability through the visual representation of reconnection with childhood.
