RYAN BANCROFT
This group project investigated a potential societal shift, where technological dependence increasingly displaces communal values as a consequence of depleting precious metal resources. Using speculative design, we envisioned a towering, multi-storey sports centre that looms above and links to every part of the city.
This project explores a near-future healthcare system where artificial intelligence becomes deeply embedded in emotionally intuitive practices. By focusing on emotion recognition, the work speculates on how even the most human aspects of care might be transformed by technological integration and the effects it may have within society.
Through the AirFlow project I attempted to address the issue of damp and mould within UK homes, by proposing a smart ventilation device. It autonomously monitors humidity levels and regulates airflow by opening or closing windows, improving air quality while maintaining thermal comfort.
My design practice is grounded in the belief that design can serve as a powerful form of social critique, challenging norms and provoking reflection beyond purely practical solutions. I hold a longstanding appreciation for aesthetics, having worked in the past in website and graphic design as well as a background in fine art, but the conceptual value that design holds in speculative projects is something that is greatly appealing to me. It allows me to explore urgent issues through potential, imagined futures, turning design into a lens for critical reflection as much as innovation.
