ROBYN WOODS

ARTIST STATEMENT

My aim as an artist is to blur the lines between painting and sculpture. I use MDF and acrylic paint to create bold, geometric three-dimensional compositions that explore the dialogue between colour, shape, and form. Each structure begins as a collection of fragments; I use a variety of unconventional shapes and off cuts which are cut by hand. The fragments are painted, layered, rearranged, and rejoined to create a wall-based structure.

My work explores contrast: contrasting colours, light versus dark, hard versus soft, opaque versus translucent. Colour theory is important to me and plays a significant role in how I choose and place each shape. The mutable nature of colour, and how it is perceived fascinates me, in the respect my work explores the tension between colour and structure as a dynamic form of expression.
