REBECCA FIELDING
ARTIST STATEMENT
Porcelain Years

My work is a manifestation of my personal feelings of discomfort in my ageing body. The work is constructed around this emotional framework, sometimes resulting in confrontational imagery. My work often provokes conflicting responses in the viewer, feelings of either alignment and understanding, or discomfort and confusion – all relevant and attributed to discourse around ageing.
I choose to use oil paint on canvas as my appreciation for traditional approaches to painting is unwavering, whilst not undermining my contemporary approach to figurative painting. I believe the material itself can create highly saturated and captivating imagery like no other medium. The methodology of my work begins with an idea motivated by feelings, sketching this out, rendering it, and enlarging it onto canvas. My aim is to convey a sense of unease, to allude to mortality, and encourage the audience to question their own feelings about the frailty of existence. Contextually, my work attempts to create a space for the exploration of individual experiences of age (in the physical and conceptual sense) and personal interpretation of my visual imagery.
