ARTIST STATEMENT

The Home of Janusz Bąk

My practice investigates the role of AI as a creative and collaborative tool, positioning it as a ‘collective unconscious.’ Coined by psychologist Carl Jung, this term refers to an inherited unconscious part of the mind, which holds universal experiences, symbols, and archetypes. AI draws knowledge from vast data sets of real people, raising the question: can we use AI to tell compelling stories?

This concept translates to a body of work that blends new media and found objects. Together, these mediums form an installation, comparable to a theatrical stage set, inviting the audience to investigate the living room of fictional character, Janusz Bąk. Janusz was created through an ongoing dialogue with AI, and as visitors explore the room, they encounter artefacts that blur the boundaries between AI generated material and reality. From the pages of books and newspapers, to the very walls of the set, AI’s alterations of everyday objects can be uncovered. Ultimately, this installation frames AI as a participant in the creative processes of art making and world building, and creates space for my audience to contemplate both its capabilities and limitations.
