DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Ellie Leigh is a third year Film and Creative Writing student who has been involved in the creation of multiple short films, such as The Painter (2024), Hoax (2024), and Fixed on You (2025). She has a particular interest in directing and writing.
Elke Stirling is a third year English Literature and Film student. She enjoys exploring the ways in which bodies inhabit space, and how their presence shifts power dynamics within these environments.
In the creation of Mindmatter, we sought to experiment with animation and projections to immerse the viewer in an other-worldly environment. The film intends to present the subject’s mind as a physical space which the viewer is absorbed within. Sound becomes an intermediary in bridging the two spaces of the film together, adding a further layer of tactility.
This film is produced as part of Experimenal Cinema Module.
SYNOPSIS
Mindmatter explores the intricate relationship between a subject’s mind and body, revealing how the struggle to bridge them together inevitably warps their perception of reality. Inspired by lyrical and structuralist film movements, Mindmatter employs a collage of artistic mediums to demonstrate how embodied experience is integral in understanding our surroundings.
