LILI KURZFELD
ARTIST STATEMENT
My
practice revolves around the depictions of interior spaces, the focus on
mundanity, and how this can evoke a sense of uncertainty. I am interested in
painting that uses texture and colour to create depth of meaning. Within my own
practice, I utilise materials such as oil paint to manipulate and gesturalise a
fabricated living space. Focusing on the theme of absence, the goal of my work
is present an interior that situates itself on the border of safety and
uncanny. Primarily, my aim is to to create loose, gestural structures, that
leave the viewer unsure as to how they should feel. Contrasting elements of
colour, tonality and subject matter, blur the lines of normality and risk, as
seen within my interior spaces series, created within my university studio
practice.
