LILA BOBILLIER
ARTIST STATEMENT
Swiss multimedia artist Lila Bobillier explores time and space through material experimentation, drawing from her multicultural upbringing and interest in existential philosophy. Her practice, situated within the field of expanded drawing, blends traditional media - graphite, paint, and paper - with unconventional materials like metal frames and survival blankets. These choices reflect metaphysical inquiries into impermanence, transformation, and the boundaries between life and Death.
Central to her work is the motif of the grid, informed by Rosalind Krauss’s 1979 essay Grids, which Bobillier adopts both formally and ideologically. The grid symbolizes order, repetition, and containment, yet also gestures toward spiritual and cultural dualities - echoing Eastern philosophies such as Yin and Yang. Her monochromatic palette and intuitive process draw inspiration from Agnes Martin’s minimalist rigor and Andy Warhol’s seriality. Across varying scales, her works create an interactive space that challenges viewers to consider identity, perception, and systems of beauty shaped by digital culture. Through repetition and material manipulation, Bobillier’s practice becomes a philosophical inquiry in visual form.
