ARTIST STATEMENT

Self Portrait series

I am interested in self-portraiture, painting my reflection in mirrors, and making direct eye contact.

I draw inspiration from Expressionism, Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism.

I am drawn to Edvard Munch’s portraits and his use of bright colours and large brushstrokes. Frank Auerbach’s idea of working through dissatisfaction and his style of self-portraiture resonate with my approach to portraiture. Further inspiration is drawn from Zinaida Serebriakova’s intimate self-portraits, Edouard Manet’s Olympia, and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

I work in oil, acrylic, and sometimes soft pastel, building layers with large brushes. I use brightly coloured base layers to make the paintings stand out. I work from dissatisfaction, always aiming to capture my authentic self in my reflection.
