ARTIST STATEMENT
Juvenile Violence series
My artwork significantly takes inspiration from Hip-Hop music culture. I work
across painting, sculpture and collage, adopting a highly experimental approach to
materials, often including graffiti and textiles within my practice. These materials
draw on the aesthetics displayed in Hip-Hop, exploiting experimental
combinations where conventional fine art mediums meet with an urban street style.
My final degree show project employs Hip-Hop's key elements, such as rapping
and graffiti. The sculptures capture the energy of Hip-Hop culture, through layered
textures and rhythmic patterns, while narrating themes of youth violence, race and
community, prevalent issues in modern, urban Hip-Hop culture. In my exhibition,
the piñata’s rain bullets, establishing a contrast between the traditional childish
associations of piñatas, while commenting upon increasing youth violence. This
project is a tribute to Hip-Hop's profound legacy, celebrating the artistic culture
within the genre, while inviting viewers to engage with the complex social and
political narratives evoked.
