JACK DIXON
ARTIST STATEMENT
My practice is underpinned by the form of the constellation. The constellation is framed through my practice as a universal system that consists of parts to a whole, components that comprise a larger picture. This aesthetic resonates across perceptual levels, from atomic arrangements that form matter to celestial bodies forming matter on a cosmic scale. I view the system of the constellation as artificially echoed through language, evident in how components such as individual words, sounds, and symbols combine to construct and carry greater meanings. The aesthetic of the constellation is reflected in my body of work, visible in its use of self-referentiality, and construction of symbols, that allow the works to function individually and as part of a wider network to transcend individual meanings, like words in a poem. This aesthetic is employed to explore the temporalities of language, the orbit of language around the unknown, and the beauty in the human impulse to construct meaning.
