DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

lnvivo (lvison, 2025) is a film exploring my experience with post-traumatic stress-disorder and sexual assault. Lyrical film as a mode of exploring this made sense to me as it obscures how we traditionally portray, and view time in film. Similarly, the way someone struggling with PTSD experiences time is very different to the way someone without PTSD experiences time. Symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, physical pain, social withdrawal, insomnia, and avoidant behaviours can make it feel as though time is passing very slowly.
Whereas, symptoms such as emotional numbing and trying to distract yourself
can make time pass too fast. What is also significant is the fact that recovery from PTSD is not a linear process, and does not have a timeline. This film explores the subjects' relationship to their body and sexuality in the face of rape culture. In particular, I consider how autonomy can be manipulated and presented.
Having space to explore this through my film proved to be a very enlightening
and cathartic experience. I am incredibly grateful to my friends, who continue to help me use film to reflect and overcome certain things.

This film is produced as part of Experimental Cinema Module.

SYNOPSIS

This colourful experimental film draws on the cinematographic work of Stan Brakhage to explore the relationship between trauma and the body. Three subjects teeter the line between sexual autonomy and objectification; a thought provoking depiction of guilt, shame and self-blame post sexual assault.
