ARTIST STATEMENT
Act 1 & Act 2
My practice currently entails working with plaster using the pillow as a subject. My work focuses in on the most human and unconquerable fear; death and mortality. Inspired by a whale carcass, whose death is tragic yet provides essential nutrients and life for the ecosystem, the cycle of life and death is never ending and inescapable. Death is universal, but our perception and fear of it is personal.
The process of using plaster is similar, while it is an act of creating a new form, plaster is also destructive; destroying the negative space in the vessel (pillow), as well as destroying the pillow itself.
In a more sinister reading, my work shows that of predator and prey, the apex pillow targeting the old, the injured, the weak.
The plaster stains my clothes, my hands, gets underneath my fingernails and makes a mess of the floor; it is physically laborious; but it is a labour of love, something which I feel is uniquely human.
