Ego
(Yunjia Zhang, 2025)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

As the director of EGO, I aimed to capture the profound conflict between family bonds and personal aspirations. Set against China’s challenging job market backdrop, the film follows Phill and Clare’s emotional showdown during their last meeting before separation. This intimate encounter mirrors the struggles many face when reality clashes with dreams.
Through a tightly - woven narrative, distinctive audiovisual language, and multi - dimensional character portrayals, EGO delves into the complex interplay between individuals and society. Each shot, line, and musical note was carefully crafted to convey the raw emotions of the characters. My goal was to create a work that not only explores cinematic art but also prompts viewers to reflect on their own choices in family and life.

This film is produced as part of Short Film Production Module.

SYNOPSIS

Phill, a struggling screenwriter, waits anxiously outside the house he once called home, holding a gift for his son, Jack. When Claire, his estranged wife, returns, their mundane exchange quickly turns into a heated argument. Years of unspoken frustrations erupt as the couple confronts their fractured relationship, revealing deeper conflicts about dreams, sacrifices, and blame.
Through sharp dialogue and poignant silences, their conflict lays bare the emotional cost of Phill’s unfulfilled ambitions and Claire’s burden of responsibility. In the end, there is no dramatic reconciliation—only the quiet acceptance that separation might be the only way for both to heal and move forward.
