CHRISTINA TANCOCK
ARTIST STATEMENT
My practice incorporates repetitions of Thai architecture and natural forms to reflect the inner
self, allowing you to step out of reality and find inner peace amidst a world full of chaos.
Throughout my practice, I have created detailed paintings of Thai temples, incorporating
mythical creatures and Thai elements to allow the viewer to view close-up details of the composition, creating a space for enlightenment and harmony.
The composition of the floating temple aligns with detaching your inner self from society, by
embodying the calm atmosphere of Thai culture through the question of how solitude is a
misconception of loneliness but instead of space for finding yourself in emotional healing and
spiritual enlightenment. I specialise in oil on canvas to utilise the medium to achieve a blended
gradient background to create a series of dreamlike atmospheres where time feels paused. In
addition, my creative process involves experimenting with temple compositions in photoshop
and mark-making from textures to create dimension, from my creative process of producing
canvases from scratch, representing my personal identity.
