DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

From a young age, I have always found comfort and joy in the world of
superheroes. Characters like Spider-Man came to me during a difficult time in my life, when I needed their messages of resilience. Since then, I’ve been obsessed. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to notice the queer subtext and the camp nature inherently linked to the superhero genre. This, coupled with the irony of the lack of explicit queer representation within the genre, made me want to explore and represent these themes in my own film.

This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.

‘Do you think it’s normal to not know who you are yet?’

SYNOPSIS

Jamie is a 16-year-old with a troubled school life and a vivid imagination. They daydream about comic books, David Bowie’s music, their own drawings—and The Cosmic Streak!, their superhero persona. As Jamie drifts in and out of this fantasy world, the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur, and their journey becomes one of queer self-discovery.

Chasing Reflections is a fresh, queer take on the superhero genre, asking
the question: What if your persona was actually your true self?
