ANYA KALSI
ARTIST STATEMENT
Repetition in my artwork transforms gestural mark-making into intricate and thought-provoking layouts, providing depth, rhythm, and structure. My work explores the dynamic interaction between repetition and mark-making, creating layered compositions that stimulate the senses. By emphasizing recurring components and themes, I aim to enhance abstract ideas, allowing rhythm, movement, and instinctiveness to emerge from an expressive perspective.
My primary mediums are graphite and coloured charcoal, chosen for their versatility and ability to convey texture and tone. Recently, I have begun to integrate a sculptural element by hanging my drawings, adding a new dimension to my work.
My creative process involves multiple stages of experimentation and research. I revisited stencils from earlier projects, using them to photograph my artwork through layered perspectives. These layered compositions were informed by photos of cobwebs, which I found compelling for their intricacy and structural qualities. This inspired me to document experiments and develop compositions in my sketchbook. Additionally, I explored creating a drawing sculpture to further expand the spatial and dimensional aspects of my work.
Through these approaches, I continue to investigate how repetition, mark-making, and materiality can convey a sense of rhythm and structure, ultimately inviting viewers into a dialogue with the abstract.
