ALYSSA SPINDLER
ARTIST STATEMENT
Although my artworks differ in medium, they all revolve
around the central theme of memory. My primary aim as an artist is to explore
how impressions of memory can be conveyed through a fractured image. Whether
drawn from my own experiences or inspired by the emotions associated with a
memory, my abstract paintings invite the viewer to form their own stories and
images and encourage them to look back on their own lives. By using a palette
knife and bold brush strokes to smear oil paint across images, I have created a
series of paintings that distort photographs to the point where the original
image is barely recognisable. What remains are only the essential elements of
the memory as well as the emotions tied to it. The hope is that the viewer may
look at the artwork and see their own feelings and experiences reflected back
at them.
