0-0-2
(Samuel Poon, 2025)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I’ve always been interested in making comedies and sports films, and 0-0-2 is the perfect opportunity to combine both elements.  Being a film student who minors in marketing, I am interested in commercial filmmaking and social media, and I think we have gotten very used to seeing influencers and celebrities in commercials and online talk directly into the camera, a technique that was only used in very few films for dramatic effects earlier in the history of cinema. Product placements was another area of interest that I was trying to explore, with how commercialised everything is, especially in media. Therefore I incorporated different forms of advertisements, and combined them into a hopefully enjoyable film.

This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.

SYNOPSIS

An injured tennis star meant for greatness who is traumatised/worried about getting injured again, turned to a monotonous job (working in a small local convenience store) and started playing pickleball as an escape. The film surrounds his journey of whether he should go back to tennis or pursue something else, something greater. Created by Samuel Poon, 0-0-2 is a sports comedy that not only explores the themes of friendship and self-discovery through sports, but also aims to incorporate different degrees of sports advertising. The corresponding dissertation thesis focuses on self-awareness, breaking the fourth wall and product placement in films, Deadpool and Wolverine (2024) and Challengers (2024) are two of the main influences for the film.
