DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
I’ve had a blast working on various projects throughout my final year and (mind,body,soul) is no exception! After learning about experimentation with physical film in the avant-garde I became really interested in how those approaches could be adapted to the modern ‘digital’ form of filmmaking. Looking into glitch art and digital materiality also lead nicely into the kind of themes I wanted to explore through the film, allowing me to contrast the natural world with more abstract depictions of the online experience.
This film is produced as part of my practice-based dissertation project.
SYNOPSIS
(mind,body,soul) is an experimental project which explores digital materiality through the mode of a contemporary structural film, attempting to draw comparisons between the treatment of traditional filmstock and digital video file formats. It is structured into three independent micro-films which make up the totality of the project, with the thematic aim of interrogating modern living in the digital world and how the internet age affects different aspects of our humanity (The Mind, The Body, The Soul). This is achieved through a variety of glitch art techniques such as datamoshing, databending, and hex editing— giving each section of the film a unique visual style and way of exploring its subject matter.
